Ultrasonic oscillations (4a) are radiated into the material and reflected oscillations (4b) are received and processed. The interference separation level is set in the range of maximum testing sensitivity, so that useful signals are separated from interference at the set level, and the test results are recorded. The interference separation level is automatically set for each position period to the mean interference power at maximum test sensitivity during a time interval fixed during the preceding radiation period.
