Vinyl thio-chloroformate and 1-methyl vinyl (thio)chloroformate prepn. - by reacting (thio)phosgene with mercury salt in polar solvent, useful as monomers
Vinyl chloroformates of formula CH2=CHR-O-CZ-Cl (where Z is S and R is H or CH3 or Z is O and R is CH3) are prepd. by reacting (thio)phosgene with an Hg salts of formula XHgCH2CRO at -20 degrees to +80 degrees c. in an inert solvent or solvent mixt. of dielectric constant 10 at 20 degrees C. (where X is Cl or a group CH2CRO where R is CH3 if phosgene is used, or R is H or CH3 if thiophosgene is used). The mercuric chloride obtd. at the end of the reaction can be easily converted by treating with alkali into mercury oxide which can then be used to prepare the mercury salt starting material for the reaction. The prod. are important as monomers as they carry reactive gps.
