The service layout has the pipes laid parallel to one another in a horizontal plane nominally above floor (2) level adjacent to a wall. The pipe runs are accommodated by openings in the rear of the kitchen bases. Compound channel blocks (1) may be used, being prefabricated with a horizontal base (1a) and a vertical rear face (1b), and providing channels for e.g (5) a waste pipe (5a) a cold water supply pipe and (5b) a hot water supply pipe. The bases of blocks may be provided with a shock absorbent layer, and the heads of the inner legs may receive vertical plinth units (8) with grooves for electric service cables.
