The automatic handling system uses a card punched in advance for each vehicle to be loaded. The cards are arranged in the order in which the vehicles are to travel past the loading mechanism, and inserted in a counting, control and printing machine. The machine receives signals from two or more detectors, each emitting one each time an item passes. It stops the loading machine when the number loaded corresponds to that punched in the card, and prints the number on the card. The detectors can be mounted one at the start and one at the end of the handling track.
