The mechanism inverts items delivered in succession by a conveyor, being particularly for packets in a postal sorting system. It comprises a drum (16) turning on a horizontal axis (18) and externally clad with elastic material such as foam rubber to support the items, the material being accommodated between the drum flanges. An endless belt (13) travels from a point where it receives the items round the drum for at least 90 deg. and to a discharge point (31) clear of the drum again. A drive mechanism for drum and belt is incorporated.
