The scrap is crushed and sepd. to obtain:- (a) harmful materials contg. chlorine, which are removed; (b) large pieces of lead; (c) organic materials obtd. from the accumulator housings; and (d) sulphate-oxide cpds. contg. lead. Fractions (c,d) are subjected to further crushing and then heated together to 1300-1500 degrees C. In an oxidising atmos. to form an oxide melt, which is then combined with fraction (b) for melting and redn. to metallic lead. The mixed fraction (c,d) is pref. crushed to 10 mm size and then melted in the fluidised state where fraction (c) forms the fuel so the amt. of external fuel is reduced; and oxygen or air used to provide the oxidising atmos. C.f. conventional processes, the yield of Pb is increased and the cost of recovery is reduced due to the reduced amt. of energy and expensive fluxes required.
