Chuck for rotary milling cutter - uses relative rotation of oval ring on round body to give ball convergence on ramped faces split sleeve which displaces axially
The chuck or mandrel is used with milling or other machines using rotary tools. It utilises the relative axial displacement of reciprocal conical surfaces to effect a circumferential gripping of the tool spindle and a converging ball bearing column acting on ramped faces to effect axial displacement, in addition a relative rotation of eccentric curved faces is used to effect ball convergence. A split sleeve with a flared conical foot houses the spindle, sliding axially in a mandrel body nose with a cone mouth, and having a solid head with diametrically opposed tangential grooves of trapezoidal section. A diametric body bore locates balls in pairs about the head, one ball of each pair engaging a groove. A rotatable ring with an oval bore engages the two outer balls; its rotation causes the balls to converge on the ramped groove faces, and, thus effect axial sleeve displacement.
