The starting gate for horse races is divided into stalls, closed at the back and front by double gates. The front gates are locked by a notched horizontal finger in which a vertical bar, on the other gate, fits. The finger is held against the bar by the crossbar of a S-shaped bar. A shaft joined to this bur free to rotate has a handle and a radial rod locked behind a stop. A coil spring turns the shaft and pulls it back to release the finger. The shafts of all stalls are connected to ensure a simultaneous opening.
