The manufacture of resonant spheres of gyromagnetic material with small diameter in relation to their wave-length involves searching for resonance in the presence of a magnetic field. A sphere is placed in a nonmagnetic sample carrier and retained by a magnetised rod. This is placed in a cavity (1) which does not resonate in the critical frequency band, and the sample is subjected to a magnetic field (He from an electromagnet. A coaxial line (32) terminated in a loop is connected to an oscillator. A second similar line (33) is connected to a wide band detector to allow a search for resonance to be made using a wobbulator. This is performed as the magnetic field is adjusted.
