The propulsive powder hopper has a blockable lateral vent (13). The hopper wall between this vent and the fill opening (4) is formed of a material which is destructable under the combined effects of the pressure applied by the powder and the flames of a fire in the region of this wall. The vent pref opens upwardly in a horizontal plane and is situated in the lower region of the hopper. The destructable zone is defined by part of the circumference of the hopper, and is directed oppositely to the positions normally occupied by users of the hopper. Should a fire occur in the hopper due to friction or electrostatic effects, the destruction of the wall above the fill opening reduces the risk of explosion and hence the danger to personnel.
