The coded connector system prevents misalignment of male and female connector electrodes esp. where the printed circuit board PCB may be part of a stack in an equipment panel etc. Similarly the coding can prevent PCB's being inserted into the wrong socket. The socket (10) is rectangular with two long side walls. One of the walls (14) has a shoulder extending horizontally to one side, this has a series of breakaway sections (19, 20, 21) which may be rectangular or square in plan. the sections may be thin or extend the whole thickness of the shoulder. The PCB (32) carries a mating rectangular strip (34) attached to the side not carrying its male electrodes. The strip has a series of breakaway tabs (35) which match those of the socket. In each case breakaway is allowed by a slot or by holes defining the break line.
