In a washing machine having programmed wash cycles and a horizontal rotating drum, the injection of washing additives into the wash tub is effected by a ring of water formed around the drum by a splashing action of the rotated drum. This action is included in the programme and the ring of water reaches the additive container opening to wash out the contents into the tub. The arrangement precludes the use of expensive electromagnetic sluice gates, which are liable to electrical failure or mechanical blockage.
