Solar heat trap and method of trapping solar heat. The system is of the type which employs the greenhouse effect of solar radiation in a heating chamber sandwiched between opposed walls of diathermic and athermanous material. A heat transfer fluid is passed through the heating chamber. The outer surface of the athermanous wall is insulated with thermal lagging to prevent heat loss to atmos. The outer surface of the athermanous wall is now insulated by a passage through which a heat transfer liq. is circulated. The liq. is used for recuperation of heat from the outer surface of the athermanous wall. Pref. both sides of the athermanous wall are continually swept, in succession, by a current of a single heat transfer fluid. The heating chamber pref. contains panels of thermally absorbent material, e.g. comprising packing of Raschig or Bialecki column packing rings. Used for heating water, vapour cooking, desalination of sea water for drinking, pumping water. Greatly increased thermal efficiency compared with existing solar traps. The new trap is only about 20% of the wt. of a previous solar trap of comparable thermal capacity.
