The fluidised bed (34) combustion chamber (12) burns pulverised solid fuel (14) and has a heat exchanger (36) within it. A compressor (42) supplies air (38) to the chamber and (40) to the heat exchanger (36). The compressor also feeds a combustion chamber (48) which supplies a gas turbine (30). The gas (28) from the fluidised bed chamber is mixed with the input to the turbine. The exhaust of the turbine drives a second turbine (56) which is coupled to a generator. Valves (82, 90) in the compressed air pipes control the flow through the fluidised bed (34) and heat exchanger (36). A valve (94) in a bypass (92) round the second turbine controls the speed of this turbine.
