Chiral synthesis for the preparation of cerulenis enantiomers of formulae (II) and (VIII) which are described in the parent patent FR2425432 (application 78-13942 Derwent 13428C/08) (where R is opt. branched, opt. unsaturated 1-12C hydrocarbyl, pref. trans R2-CH:CH-CH2-, cis R2-CH:CH-CH2- or R2-CC-CH2- R2 is 1-9C opt. branched opt. unsaturated hydrocarbyl and R1 is H or methyl) is described. Cpds. have antibiotic activity, e.g. antifungal activity.
