Determn. of gas in metal sample - which is melted and carburised with graphite esp. to determine nitrogen in metals such as zirconium

Sample is placed on graphite in a graphite crucible, which is then heated in inert gas or vacuum to cause complete carburisation of the metal, and to evolve gases in the latter. Sample is pref. placed on a woven graphite mat previously located in the crucible. In the case of metals which do not form carbides which melt readily, another substance, esp Ni or Pt, is pref added to the crucible with the metal sample. Use of the costly metal Pt is only required in afew, exceptional cases.
