The shearing machine is used to trim a section off the end of a coil of sheet metal strip, e.g. to true the end up, being designed to cater for coils of various diameters. The coil is supported on a stand which rotates the coil using a pair of rollers on horizontal parallel axles. The distance between the roller axles is less than the dia. of the smallest coil to be treated. The arrangement maximises the outer angle subtended by the remote roller axle, the coil centroid and the fixed cutting edge of the horizontally acting shears. The angle may be between 270 and 300 deg.
