The dispenser comprises a thread store with a delivery point from which one end of the thread is drawn. A cutter is fixed at a distance from the delivery point such that once a predetermined length of thread has been cut off, there remains a length of thread projecting from the delivery point. This projecting length is easy to grasp and pull when the next length is required. The thread store can be a bobbin or a storage tube and the cutter is pref. a fixed blade. The dispenser can be used in one hand.
