Copper catalysed prepn. of di:aryl ether(s) - from aryl halide and alkaline phenolate with phenol

Diaryl ethers are prepd. by reaction of a non-activated halobenzene (I) with an alkaline phenolate ArOM (II), (where Ar is opt. substd. phenyl; M is an alkaline cation) in the presence of a copper catalyst and of a phenol ArOH (III) which is the phenol from which the phenolate is derived. Cpds. are intermediates for phytosanitary prods. and pharmaceuticals. Process is carried out at atmospheric pressure and at only moderately elevated temp. in the absence of any solvent. It is therefore easy to carry out on an industrial scale.
