The vessel comprises a central chamber surrounded by an annular compartment. The chamber is in communication with the compartment at both top and bottom. Fermenting material can be moved alternately upwards and downwards in both the chamber and compartment. Movement in the chamber can be in phase with or in opposition to movement in the compartment. Upward movement in the central chamber causes fermenting material to overspill at the top into the annular compartment. Downward movement in the chamber causes the material to discharge at the bottom into the compartment. Mfr. of biological fuel gas such as methane. After fermentation the residue can serve as agricultural fertiliser. The process is continuous and can use waste material with more than 25 per cent dry matter content, e.g. household refuse, stable litter etc. without added liq.
