The workpiece is placed on a bed fitted with two cheeks carrying a pair of guide bars along which a slide can be pushed or pulled by a handle. The slide includes an elbow lever actuated by the handle and fitted with two forks. One fork carries a cutting wheel which makes a score in the surface of a tile when the slide is moved in one direction; the cutting wheel then enters recess in the bed while arms mounted on the second fork exert a bending load so the tile fractures along the score. The pref. appts. includes a limit stop and a graduated scale employed to locate a tile in a desired posn. so the cut tiles have the correct size. The bed pref. includes a rib located between two elastic pads so a bending load can be exerted on the tile. Even thick paving stones can be cut by this machine.
