On the exit side of a rolling mill are pairs (11,12) of rolls running on only part of the top and bottom surfaces of the strip, and applying tension to the latter. Each pair of rolls is driven by a motor with a tachogenerator and synchro. The result is that electric signals, representing the actual strip tension and the angular position of rolls can be fed into a strip tension controller in an electronic comparator circuit. The result is that the tension can be adjusted across the width of the strip, so that flat strip free from barrel profiles or undulations can be obtd. The electronic circuit is pref. also connected to the hydraulic profile controller (10) for the work rolls (3) in a 4-high mill.
