A sealing surface (4) has two confronting spherical portions (h) intersected by the symmetry plane of the valve, which contains the rotation axis of the valve. Two conical portions (f, g) are situated on opposite sides of the symmetry plane. The spherical and conical portions merge smoothly with each other. When the valve turns, the conical surfaces press against a seat formed by a circular steel ring. As a result, the ring adopts an elliptical shape that conforms to the elliptical centre-line of the sealing surface.
