Wear and/or corrosion resistant coatings for machine parts - applied by friction welding, and suitable for coating piston rings with molybdenum

The parts are made esp. of cast iron, steel or Al; and the coating are applied by heating which causes at least partial metling of the surface of the part. the heat is generated by friction of the part with a tool moved with high kinetic energy and/or high pressure w.r.t. the surface of the part. Conventional metal and/or metal-ceramic coating materials, esp. powders, are pref. located between the part and the tool when the friction is generated; and these coating materials may be used to form a coating on the part prior to melting via friction causing a charge in structure. The process is pref. used on piston rings, sealing rails, cylinder liners, and the valve seats, in IC engines. The simple, economic and reliable process avoids costly and difficult operations necessary with conventional coating processes.
