The appts. comprises a shell having gas and liq. admission and discharge pipes and reflux plates arranged one above the other with gaps in between. The reflux plates are made in the form of trays open at the top and assembled into packs. The trays have counter-opposed inclined rims and are arranged on a descending spiral so that passages remain in the shell between the rims and the shell walls for the vertical flow of gas. Horizontal guide baffles partition the passages and deflect the gas flow from one passage into another through the gaps between the trays in the direction from one inclined rim to the other. The inclined rims of the trays create turbulence in the gas flow as it contacts the liq. which increases mass exchange efficiency. Used for rectification in vacuo of materials sensitive to high temp. e.g. lactams, fatty acids and various foods and pharmaceuticals.
