The small diameter crucible (4) has an open top with a flange (41). A metal plate (14) which has a larger diameter than the crucible and flange is fixed to the flange at the top of the crucible. The object (2) to be heated is held on top of the metal plate (14). The crucible is filled with a powdered metal oxide and a reducing agent. The mixture is ignited by a fuse (6) extending from outside the unit. The whole of the mixture takes part in the reaction because it is in a confined space and the top plate spreads the heat evenly to the object on it.
