Plain knitted fabric having inlaid coarse woollen yarns - in knitted loops of fine synthetic yarns

A plain knitted fabric is produced on a single-cylinder circular knitting machine from at least two yarns of different materials, one being a fine-count synthetic yarn which is knitted on all needles to give a plain fabric, the other being a coarse-count woollen yarn 4-5 times heavier than the synthetic, which is inlaid in the loops formed by the synthetic yarn. The fabric is finished by a milling treatment without tension, whereby the woollen yarns contract and cover the synthetic needle-loops, giving a dimensionally-stable fabric with a finished width of 1.50-1.60 m. This construction gives a fabric having the appearance of a milled woven cloth with improved drape and wearing properties, and having extensibility of 10-20% both laterally and longitudinally, which can be produced on a simple, high-speed machine at a rapid rate.
