Two laser light sources (1,2) are mounted on either side of the surface on which the object to be located rests. Two video cameras (3,4) receive reflected light from the object (P), and an electronic circuit encodes the video signal and processes the collected data. The lasers (1,2) are oriented so they form a continuous line of illumination round the surface of the object and the video cameras are placed above the lasers to give a perspective view of the section periphery defined by the laser light. After removal of the synchronising signals from the video output the data is stored in a table which is regularly scanned for correspondence with a table representing a known object and a signal is output if this occurs.
