Anti-fraud handling system for e.g credit cards - uses memory within encoded card and reader programmed to operate for limited time

The system uses a suitably encoded card (10) provided with an electronic memory (11) constructed between layers of plastic in a conventional card configuration. The card (10) is then plugged into a suitable socket (17) on a reader (18). The reader (18) then reads the memory contents at high speed and performs decoding manipulations (21) on the encoded data in the card memory. The reader is programmed to operate for a limited time so that any attempt to divert the data, with, say a microprocessor based device connected between the reader and the card, will fail for want of sufficient time. The reader may also be programmed to destroy fusible elements in the card if the allowed access time is exceeded. If the card holder is required to enter information, a keyboard (25) provides access for a limited time.
