The refuse container has a rectangular top opening covered by a lid which is provided with downward extending arms (5') pivoted to the respective side walls of the container. The lid is held in the closed position by a spring (10), acting on at least one of the arms. The spring is arranged on the container wall side of the arm and has its lower end secured at a fixed point (18) away from the pivot bearing (8) to that wall, whilst its upper end is secured to the upper end (13) of a lever (11) which swivels on the pivot and is located relative to the arm.
