Natural colourant for use in hair colouring compsns. - prepd. by solvent extracting roots of Boraginaceae family of plants

Prodn of natural colouring comprises solvent extn of the sub-soil parts of the Borraginaceae (Borage) family selected from Anchusa virginica, Lithospermum tinctorium, Onosma echiodides, Echuim rubrum and Alkanna tinctoria followed by concn of the solvent extract. The colorant is used in cosmetic hair dyeing compsn. Pref plants are Alkanna tinctoria and Onasma echioides and the pref pants are the bark of the roots. Solvents are pref 1-3C alcohols, 3-5C ketones, 1-2C halohydrocarbons and mixtures of these or a basic soln. The colourant is pref concentrated by liq/liq extn with a 1-2C halohydrcarbon. For the final concn, the soln is evaporated on a polyol, an animal or vegetable oil, or a surfactant. The compsn also pref contain a salt, esp of Al or Fe. The colourants are non-toxic, have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, as well as having remarkable dyeing properties.
