The system uses a probe assembly which contains TV observation or measuring and detection instrumentation and is sealed against ingress of water. A sealed connector permits connection to a cable, containing wire or optical conductors whose numbers are reduced by multiplexing transmissions in sequential form. The cable is wound on a reel mounted on a submarine. The drum assembly is braked by frictional effects when unwinding is in operation. The cable is pref. wound inside the drum and is provided with a light adhesive which brakes its unwinding action. The coil can also be mounted on a rotational axis; in which case the cable can be mounted outside the drum, and braking can be provided by friction on the drum.
