Casting pipe on base of tundish in continuous casting plant - has two tangential outlet holes through which molten metal flows into rotating mould, esp. to cast round steel bars

The plant includes a mould which is rotated on a vertical axis, and which is used to cast solid bars. The casting pipe is vertical, and is located on the axis of the mould. The bottom end of the pipe is immersed in the molten metal in the mould and has at least one tangential outlet which slopes upwards towards its exit end. The pref. casting pipe has a bottom end with an increased dia. and a closed base. In the large bottom end are two tangential outlet holes diametrically opposite each other and sloping upwards at 5-40, esp. 10-25 deg. The outlet holes are pref. 5-15, esp. 10 cm below the surface of the molten metal. Esp. used for the mfr. of round steel bars. The prevention of segregation in the solidifying bar, and the absence of solid bridges of metal between the mould and the casting pipe. Such bridges can cause fracture of the pipe.
