Grid for extruding ceramic paste into honeycombs - comprises hard plate with regular drilled holes backed by fused on alloy machined into grooves
Extrusion grid is described for mfr. of ceramic materials in the form of a honeycomb, having a first surface traversed with large orifices, for entry under pressure of the ceramic material to be extruded in paste form, and distributed over a network which is geometrically regular over the whole surface, and a second surface traversed by narrow regular grooves in two perpendicular directions, into which the ceramic paste spreads. The orifices are centred at right angles to the intersections of grooves. Specifically the first face is prepd. by any known machining process, then a very hard metal layer is deposited on the machined surface, into which is machined the narrow grooves starting from the underside. The grids are used to make honeycomb ceramics for use as catalyst supports, heat exchanger and refractory boats or linings for rapid heating heat treatment furnaces. The grid is produced inexpensively and more simply and gives a product with increased wear resistance, which ensures a regularity of dimensions of the extruded structure throughout the working life of the grid.
