A solar energy trap features an ancillary chamber which retains a lower temp. on and above the surface of the heat sink slab than that generally prevailing within the trap. Any moisture within the trap, i.e. in the main cavity between the heat sink and its transparent cover, condenses preferentially within the ancillary chamber, leaving the surface of the main heat sink dry and therefore more receptive than one covered with condensate. The transparent cover used for the ancillary chamber is of material which does not inhibit escape of infra red radiation developed by heating of the heat sink, so that in the ancillary chamber, the temp. of the heat sink is not enhanced by a 'green house' effect, and therefore remains cooler than that throughout the rest of the trap. Opt. the transparent cover of the ancillary chamber is of polymethylmethacrylate, or a transparent polyolefin or PVC cpd.
