A machine (10) for cropping bar stock (25) repetitively into slugs of uniform length comprises a gravity feeder (12) consisting of downwardly inclined tubes (20) which support lengths of bar stock (25) for sliding movement into a shear (11) having a stationary bottom blade (15) and a reciprocally movable top blade (16). Pivotally mounted a set distance in front of the shear (11) is a stop (13, 41) which arrests forwardly sliding bar stock (25) from the feeder and positions the stock while the shear (11) is performing its cutting stroke. The stop is movable by or in conjunction with the repetitive action of the shear (11) and is arranged to return to a stopping position whenever the shear (11) opens after a cutting stroke. IMAGE
