The frame of an umbrella or umbrella-type tent has two hubs (12, 14) which slide together or apart along a guide rod (13) to erect or collapse the frame; the frame ribs (11) are attached to one hub (12) and supporting struts (15) for the ribs are attached to the other (14). A spigot (29) on the lower hub (14) is received in a socket (24) in the upper hub (12), when the tent is erected; the spigot and socket are both slightly eccentric to the guide rod (13), so that, by turning one hub relative to the other the spigot (29) will bind within the socket (24) onto the guide rod, and thereby prevent collapse of the tent.
