PURPOSE:To obtain a treated water having a quality satisfying the environmental standard while eliminating the clogging of catalyst and chelate resin due to slime by adding chlorine agent to Hg-contg. waste water and sequentially contacting it to catalyst and chelate resin. CONSTITUTION:By adding chlorine agent to Hg-contg. waste water, Hg present in the waste water is oxidized into ionic Hg. Chlorine agent used includes a chemical which generates free chlorine such as chlorine gas, hypochlorite, electrolytically produced chlorine gas. Then, the water contg. inonic Hg, prior to contacting chelate resin, is contacted with catalyst carrying Co and/or Ni. This allows chlorine agent present in the water to be effectively adsorbed and removed. At the same time, org. material around the catalyst is oxidized and removed. Then, the water from which chlorine agent and org. material are nearly completely removed and now including only inonic Hg is contacted with chelate resin.
