PURPOSE:To simplify the exposure mechanism of a copying machine by eliminating the need for a device such as a clutch, by providing members, which engage only in a reciprocal motion area, to a chain in the reciprocal driving device of the exposure mechanism. CONSTITUTION:Chains 18 and 21 run in parallel only between pulleys 7 and 8, and 11 and 12, and their interval is set to the reciprocal movement length of a platen. The chain 21 is provided with a pin 22 externally and pins 26 and 27 internally, and the chain 18 is also provided with blocks 19 and 24 which have recessed parts 20 and 25. The pin 22 is fitted in the long-sized hole 4 of an arm 3 fixed to the platen. The blocks 19 and 24 press the pins 26 and 27 respectively to drive the chain 21 between the pulleys 7 and 11. Thus, the platen 2 is put in reciprocating motion as two actions. The blocks and pins are disengaged at the branch points of the running paths of the chains, thus eliminating the need for a clutch.
