POLYSACCHARIDE PS-A FROM PLANT OF GENUS EPIMEDIUM, ITS PREPARATION, AND IMMUNE ENHANCER COMPRISING POLYSACCHARIDE PS-A AS ACTIVE INGREDIENT

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled drug capable of promoting the function of a chemotherapeutical drug by medicating the titled drug and the chemotherapeutical drug to a patient with reduced immune function, by comprising a polysaccharide PS-A which is extracted from a plant of the genus epimedium, isolated and purified, as an active ingredient. CONSTITUTION:A mixed solvent of water and an organic solvent (e.g., lower alcohol, etc.) compatible with water is added to a plant of the genus epimedium to give an aqueous extracted solution. The extracted solution is defatted, and an organic solvent compatible with water in any ratio is added to the solution to give a precipitate, which is dissolved in water. A long-chain quaternary ammonium salt is added to the solution, formed compounded substances are removed, and the solution is purified by chromatography, to give the desired fraction. Elemental analysis: C 40.92, H 6.17, ash trace amount. Molecular weight: 75,000+ or -25,000. Properties of substance: white-slightly brown amorphous powder. Decomposition point: 205 deg.C. pH: 7.0 Constitutional saccharide: found to have physical and chemical properties of arabinose, galactose, etc., and immune enhancing action.
