PURPOSE:To obtain a glass melting molybdenum electrode capable of preventing high temp. oxidation at the time of furnace heating work by spray-forming a fire resistant oxide film on the surface of a molybdenum electrode; coating glass powder on the film; and heat melting the powder. CONSTITUTION:A fire resistant oxide film is formed on the surface of a glass melting molybdenum electrode by flame or plasma spraying a fire resistant oxide such as SiO2, Al2O3, ZrO2, MgO or TiO2, or a mixt. thereof. Glass powder is then coated on the film and heat melted to form an airtight oxidation preventing film. The glass powder is below about 325 mesh fine powder of quartz glass, heat resistant borosilicate glass or SiO2-R2O-RO-ZrO2 glass (where RO is a divalent metal oxide such as CaO, MgO, SrO or BaO and R2O is Li2O, Na2O or K2O).
