An appts. for continuously treating sheets of paper, textiles or plastics consists of applying pressure, opt. in conjunction with temp. as the sheet passes through roll gaps. An assembly comprising four or more rolls of comparatively small dia., surrounded by four or more rolls of larger dia. is used; the outer, large rolls press against the inner ones and support them. The sheet passes around the rolls in such a manner that three roll gaps are formed at each of the smaller rolls in conjunction with other smaller and/or larger rolls. The ratio of the larger dia. to the smaller dia. is less than the square of 1/(2 power (1/2-1). Pref. the ratio of the dias. exceeds 3, more specifically exceeds 4. With this arrangement, rolls of considerably smaller dia. can be used than was previously possible and consequently the roll assembly is smaller than previous arrangements.
