A process for the preparation of a haemostatic agent from the plant Boerrhavia diffusa Linn-particularly effective to stop Intra-Uterine Contraceptive Device induced bleeding in women, when administered orally or parenterally, comprising extracting the plant Boerrhavia diffusa Linn, with 50 to 95 percent aqueous lower alkyl alcohol, concentrating the alcoholic extract below 50 degree under reduced pressure followed by removal of the lipid material as from the alcoholic concentrate by shaking it with petroleum ether or benzene and extracting the active haemostatic constituent by shaking the lipid free alcoholic concentrate with n-butanol saturated with water, removal of the solvent from the n-butanol extract gives an amorphous light yellowish brown powder which is purified by column chromatography over a silica gel column using chloroform and chloroform methanol or ethanol mixture as eluents to yield the desired haemostatic agent as a yellowish amorphous substance.
