The detector system is for fire or heat, using optical fibres as the conducting medium. The optical fibres are connected to detectors of ultraviolet or infrared radiation, which are absorbed by the surface of the fibres. The fibres can be uncoated or coated with a transparent material. The material can be transparent to ultraviolet radiation or infrared radiation. The detectors are connected at the end of the fibres.
