Fish tank and plant culture combination - pumps polluted tank water on to filter acting as plant substrate and draining into tank below

The combined fish (2) tank (1) and plant (12) culture enclosure (8) has a pump (7) which transfers (4,6,9,10) water containing fish waste products from the tank (1) to a layer of filter material (11), such as glass wool or rock wool, in the enclosure (8). This layer is used for germinating plant seeds or growing plants. After passing through this layer, the filtered water returns (14,15) to the tank. The filter material may be carried on the staging of a greenhouse or in troughs, pref. inclined, to drain into the fish tank below it. Drainage may be via drainage tubes placed under the filter material.
