PURPOSE:To obtain mesocarbon microbeads of uniform particle size from a heavy oil, by separating a primarily heat-treated pitch from a precipitate after the secondary heat treatment and recovering a tiny meso-phase sphere produced in the residual pitch. CONSTITUTION:A primarily heat-treated pitch obtd. by the primary heat treatment of heavy oil contg. a tiny meso-phase sphere is first cooled to a temp. = its sofening temp. Then it is subjected to the seconary heat treatment at a temp. ranging from at least 300 deg.C, pref. at least 350 deg.C to a temp. 20 deg.C, pref. 40 deg.C, lower than the primary heat treatment temp. and then a tiny meso-phase sphere precipitated during the secondary heat treatment is separated from the heat-treated pitch by cooling the pitch at a cooling rate =200 deg.C/hr. A tiny meso-phase sphere of uniform particle size produced in the residual pitch is recovered by solvent extraction. It is possible to adjust the particle size of the mesocarbon microbead (MC) to an arbitrary size from 1 to 30mu because a higher cooling rate makes the particle size of MC smaller and a lower rate larger.
