Dressing sulphide-contg. iron ores to recover spongy iron - by chlorinating with chlorine, air and opt. ferric chloride vapour, converting sulphur di:oxide obtd. to sulphuric acid
In the integral dressing of non-ferrous metal sulphide ores, the ores are treated with a gaseous stream of chlorine and oxygen, pref. also contg. 0.1-5% (by vol. of the stream) ferrie chloride vapour. When the ore (mixt.) contains iron sulphides, 0.1-5% (by vol. of the stream) of ferric chloride is solid form may be added to the ore. The process is useful for treating ores such as pyrites and chalcopyrites to recover volatile non- ferrous metal chlorides and produce an ash which can be leached to leave a product suitable for iron making. The process is esp. applicable to complex ores such as pyrite which contains sulphides of Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Co, Au and Ag or pyrite- chalcopyrite mixts. (Provisional basic previously advised in Week 83/30).
