When chlorine dioxide is produced through the reduction of sodium chlorate with an excess of sulfur dioxide in water solution with a strong sulphuric acid content in a primary reactor, the gas mixture coming from the primary reactor, which contains chlorine dioxide and unconsumed sulfur dioxide, is brought into contact with chlorine gas in the presence of water. The chlorine supplied is sufficient to oxidize at least the main part of the sulfur dioxide content in the gas mixture. The amount of water consumed is little so that there is a high acid content in the water. The gas mixture is separated from the water and led to a chlorine dioxide absorption stage. The water separated from the gas mixture is led to a secondary reactor in which the sodium chlorate from the primary reactor that has not reacted is dissolved during the formation of a gas stream containing chlorine dioxide.IMAGE
