The X-ray amorphous physiologically acceptable acid addition salts of ergot alkaloids and dihydroergot alkaloids of the general formula: IMAGE wherein HA represents a monobasic or dibasic physiologically acceptable organic acid, X-Y represents the group -CH2CH or the group -CH=C R1 represents C1-4alkyl, and R2 represents C1-4alkyl or benzyl, are more water soluble than the corresponding salts in crystalline form.
