The coke oven consists of horizontal chambers with a roof contg. charging holes. A wagon can travel along the roof, and carries at least one coal hopper which tapers conically downwards to the cylindrical casing of a star feeder. In the feeder casing is a wheel with radial partitions forming separate feeder cells and on the base of the casing is an outlet pipe which can be located above a charging hole in an oven chamber. The feeder casing and its star wheel are designed so that, for any angular position of the wheel, two of the radial partitions form a seal between the coal hopper and the outlet pipe on the base of the casing. The star wheel pref. has six partitions spaced 60 deg. apart from each other. The star feeder wheel forms an effective seal in its casing, and replaces a screw feeder which was unsatisfactory.
